In the past, sports training has focused mostly on strength (weight lifting) and speed (linear running). Although these are very important to improve one’s physical condition, they should not be the only factors involved in a sports performance enhancement program. Balance, power, reaction, core stability, and proper energy system training (endurance) have taken center stage.
In order to train athletes properly, we must first evaluate the athlete to find out where their strengths and weaknesses lie. Once we find this out, we must correct them in order to produce a more efficient body and lessen the chance of injuries.
We must train body movements in multidirectional patterns, not just train muscles in one plane of motion (which most of yesterday’s and today’s sports training programs do).
